Born in 1836, Austrian porcelain manufacturer Ernst Wahliss had been running a ceramics and porcelain boutique in Vienna since 1863, earning him international success and enabling him to open the Wahliss department store in London and establish himself as the main supplier to the great European royal families. As Vienna's first porcelain retailer, Wahliss offered hand-painted objects with brightly colored enamels. In 1897, he acquired Alfred Stellmacher's factory in Turn-Tepliz, Bohemia, and produced decorative ceramics under the name "Ernst Wahliss Kunst, Porzellan und Fayence Fabrik". The Austrian craftsman collaborated in particular with Austrian designer Karl Klaus, making his mark on the 19th-century art scene with white porcelain figurines featuring natural, fine geometric motifs and gilded details. After his death, his son Gerhard Martin Wahliss took over the factory in 1907, continuing to create a rich variety of decorative and functional objects in porcelain and earthenware.
