First color panorama of the Martian landscape

The interior of a crater surrounding the Opportunity rover at Meridiani Planum on Mars is visible in this color image taken by the rover's panoramic camera. This is the darkest landing site ever visited by a spacecraft on Mars. The edge of the crater is about 10 meters from the rover. The diameter of the crater is estimated at 20 meters (65 feet). Scientists are intrigued by the abundance of rocky outcroppings scattered throughout the crater, as well as the crater floor, which appears to be a mixture of large gray grains and fine reddish grains. Data from the camera's near-infrared, green, and blue filters were combined to create this approximately true-color image, taken on the first day of Opportunity's journey.
