NASA. Beautiful and rare first view of the space shuttle CHALLENGER (Mission STS-7), whose silhouette is perfectly outlined by the darkness of space. The photograph was taken with the Free-flying Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS-01). Clearly visible in the shuttle's payload bay are the protective cradles for Telesat's Anik C2 and Palapa B communications satellites, NASA's Office of Space and Earth Applications (OSTA-2) pallet, the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) and the KU-band antenna. The STS-7 astronaut crew with the RMS arm then retrieved the SPAS and returned it to its stowed position in the payload bay for the return to Earth.
