Africa. Exceptional Mambila mask (Nigeria). Situated on both sides of the Nigeria-Cameroon border, the Mambila people produced zoomorphic masks called "Sua-ga" belonging to male and female associations. As in statuary, the use of natural pigments strongly emphasizes the relief of the sculpture and has its own symbolism. Belonging to the great tradition of horizontal masks evoking buffalo or antelope, they are found in use among Sahelian peoples from Mali to Cameroon. A fine example with an old patina that attests to its long use, as do the two native tin plate restorations on the underside.
