NASA's spectacular image of the Horsehead Nebula

NASA. LARGE FORMAT. Fantastic image of the Horsehead Nebula taken by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, focusing on a portion of the horse's "mane" about 0.8 light-years wide. The ethereal clouds that appear in blue at the bottom of the image are filled with a variety of materials such as hydrogen, methane and water ice. The red streaks above the main nebula represent atomic and molecular hydrogen. Ultraviolet light emitted by massive young stars near the horse's mane creates a zone of essentially neutral, hot gas and dust. As in many of Webb's images, distant galaxies are scattered in the background, giving the photograph its fantastic dimension.
